No Entry to Mt. Shiude During Sakura Season 2020
For the past few years, Mt. Shiude has been able to welcome around 40,000 visitors from many different prefectures and countries during Sakura Season. This year, we were excited to anticipate nearly 50,000 visitors.
In order to accommodate these large numbers, beginning in 2019 the road to the top of the mountain was closed to all but the shuttle buses that ferried all visitors up, allowing the largest number of people possible to enjoy the cherry blossoms easily and comfortably.
Although the plan was initially to do the same this year, the continuing spread of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, has made the implementation of communal transportation on this scale inadvisable. As such, this year’s shuttle buses have been cancelled.
Additionally, in anticipation of large crowds and in the interest of public health and safety, the mountain will be closed to the public for the duration of Sakura Season.
March 25, 2020 – April 13, 2020*
No entry permitted to Mt. Shiude by any route or means.
*Dates may change to reflect the flowers’ actual blooming period.
【Reasons for Closure】
・Public events drawing large crowds increase the risk of spreading COVID-19 .
・This particular even is anticipated to draw many people from various prefectures and countries, leading to a significant risk of spreading
・A proactive response is necessary to contain the virus as much as possible.
・Without shuttle buses, cars heading to the summit will create severe traffic congestion around the mountain, inconveniencing locals and
creating hours-long wait times.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter and hope that everyone will look forward to next year’s cherry blossoms with as much enthusiasm as this year’s.
