Lunch Spots Around Awashima Island
There are plenty of delicious food and drinks to be found in Mitoyo during the 2019 Setouchi Triennale. Let’s check out some of the best!
There are multiple options on Awashima Island itself. On weekends and holidays the PhoUdon ＆ COFFEE HOUSE will be open and offer special, limited-time only fare. Of course, this means that it may be very crowded on those days.
But don’t worry! We’ve collected everything you need to know in order to decide whether you should visit on a weekend, weekday, or holiday! (Additional information about weekday options coming soon!)
Located next to the Maritime Museum, Le-port Awashima provides lunches and accommodations year-round. During the Triennale, they will be serving special bento boxes including premium seafood donburi (￥1,800), Niku Udon (￥600), Curry (￥750), and Menchi katsu (￥150, also available for takeout).
Additionally, outside of the Triennale period, Le-port Awashima is known for hosting a sea firefly event in the Summer, and an Oyster extravaganza in the Winter.

Island Cafe Makino
5 minutes along the shore past Awashima Maritime Museum is a traditionally Japanese-style house. Inside, it houses not only unique artworks, but also messages left by visitors to past Setouchi Triennales. Try out a retro-style massage chair while you look out over a gorgeous view of the Setouchi!
Their menu includes Tamago kake gohan (comes with soup and a side for ￥600) as well as coffee and cake sets (￥500).

During most of the year, Iseya is just a water taxi service. However, during the Triennale they will serve dry curry, drinks, and a variety of delicious baked goods from Henkotsupan, a popular local bakery!

Gift Shop Nishiyama
On the way to Awashima Maritime Museum from Awashima Port, visitors may spot a gift shop. But this gift shop has more than souvenirs, it also serves beverages like bubble tea and baked goods from Spitz Bakery and Cafe Repos! Take a look at their original goods while you snack!

A few minutes’ walk from the Maritime Museum towards the shore will bring you to Awaroha Cafe. During the Triennale, this stylish cafe will be serving Thai-style donburi topped with marinated tuna!

PhoUdon ＆ COFFEE HOUSE
Vietnamese artist Dinh・Q・Le brings PhoUdon ＆ COFFEE HOUSE to Awashima Island. This project brings together the famous Vietnamese noodle dish, pho, and udon, a favorite dish in the Setouchi. It is served together with with another regional specialty, iriko rice, for a delicious, limited-time meal.
Don’t forget to enjoy it with Vietnamese coffee, sweetened with condensed milk!

Island Cafe Bokuya
Located a bit closer to beach from Awaroha Cafe, this popup cafe offers Tamago kake gohan served with soup and a side for ￥600, or coffee and cake sets for ￥500. (Savvy snackers can get both for ￥900!)

Takeuchi General Store
This, the island’s only store, has been serving the locals for years. They offer a variety of snacks and ice cream.

Near the Port for Easy Access!
Opened in August 2019, Mitoyo Tsuru is a rennovated sake brewery. It serves foods with deep roots in the local culture of the area. It’s perfect for people visiting for the Triennale, as it’s very close to Suda Port. In fact, for the duration of the Triennale, Mitoyo Tsuru will be holding various events and prepared special, limited-time only dishes!
