Sanuki Temari Hand Balls

Vegetable dyes create cute colors in these traditional Kagawan crafts

Kagawa (traditionally called Sanuki) is home to the temari, or hand ball. These traditional crafts are made from cotton threads dyed using natural vegetable dyes. First, plain threads are wrapped into a base, then the dyed threads are used to embroider designs. The design is painstakingly hand-stitched, creating a finished product that is cuter than anything else.
Though the temari are created using a variety of common patterns and motifs, they are all made individually and no two are exactly alike. Come find the unique hand ball that speaks to you.
