Yakuoji Temple

A temple overflowing with peonies

Yakuoji Temple is devoted to Bhaisajyaguru, the buddha of healing and medicine. It was affiliated with Sugaojinja Shrine until the Meiji Restoration as a bettoji (a temple that was attached to a shrine before the Edo period, when Shinto and Buddhism intermixed). The temple grounds contain a main hall, a Daishido, a reception hall, a monastery kitchen, and a main temple gate, in addition to the Honjido and bell tower which were transferred from Sugaojinja during the Meiji period.
The locals often call it "Peony Temple," as there are many peony bushes of numerous varieties throughout the temple grounds. Statues include not only Bhaisajyaguru, but also the eight medicine buddhas (including Acala and Vaisravana), and a Buddhist picture of Mehiki Daishi being worshipped along with a statue of Kobo Daishi.

Peonies typically begin to bloom in mid-April, and are in full bloom around late April.
